Leatherworking was once a significant local industry, closely linked to the availability of water and bark from surrounding woodland.

Tanning required large quantities of bark, processed in bark mills, and access to clean running water. The presence of tanneries, fellmongers and curriers reflects a complete local production chain—from raw hides to finished leather goods.

Buildings associated with this trade still exist, particularly around Castle Street and Frog Street, providing a physical link to this industrial past.
