It covers the history of this small hamlet near Bampton from the Romans, the Saxons, and the Normans to cover Dernscombe Chapel, Nutcombe Manor, the parish church, local charities, the change in population, etc. There are no fewer than 8 appendices with detailed information.

It is very remarkable how much has been discovered about this tiny parish (population 127 at the last census) which is one of Bampton's five-parish group, the Hukeley Mission Community.

To get a good idea of the history of Bampton, the best way is to follow the 'Bampton Town Trail': this is a walk which takes you around the town, and introduces you to historic sites and buildings.

There is a free leaflet available from the Heritage Centre, who also organise guided tours around the town.

"Field Guide Number Ten" from the Devon Archaeological Association gives a guide to the history of the castle in Bampton and an explanatioin of what would have been sited there in ancient times.

This book, written by Caroline Seward, gives a community history of Bampton, and is illustrated with numerous wonderful old photographs, most of which came from Reg Kingdon's collection.
