The layout of Bampton is shaped by its early development, with streets following natural contours and historic routes through the town. The relationship between the river, the market area and surrounding land influenced how the settlement expanded.
Maps and plans show how the town evolved, with some areas remaining largely unchanged while others reflect later growth and redevelopment.

PUTTING BAMPTON ON THE MAP. A fascinating bit of historical research looking at the development of our town using a sequence of old maps. The story involves the original packhorse routes, the turnpikes, the old river bridge, the arrival of the first Royal Mails, the quarries, and the railway - and more. Oh and the magic of LIDAR!
